Welcome to the first post of the blog! As school is getting ready to start, many of my clients are starting to experience the anxiety that comes with it. Sometimes it can be hard to figure out what is important to focus on first. With all of the things to do before the first day of school, and all of the things to feel nervous about, goal setting can be a great tool to help organize our thoughts.
When I was a teacher, I frequently used SMART goals with my students. Now, I enjoy using them with my clients. It often times helps my clients feel more organized and at ease with their school year, and assists me in supporting them in reaching their goals.
SMART goals focus on the following:
Specific: What EXACTLY do I want to happen?
Measurable: I will know I have reached my goal when...
Attainable: With hard work, is it possible to reach this goal by the deadline?
Realistic and Relevant: My goal is important enough for me to put a plan into action. I will follow this specific plan to reach my goal.
Time-Bound: I will reach my goal by...
Goals can be large or small, and you can have a discussion with your clients about what kind of specific goals are important to them to create. Sometimes, it can be helpful to brainstorm vague versus specific, so their goals are more relevant and detailed. The most important thing is that the goals chosen are the client's own, and are valuable to them to achieve. Happy goal setting!
